The photo above is a few of the birds we used to breed. We had finches Weiros, Ringneck Parrots, King Parrots and many others. Then when we sold our house and decided to go travelling, we had to leave them all behind. I still miss them but satisfy myself watching all the birds in nature now.
If you are thinking of having a bird aviary, no one as complicated as the one we had. Why not start with the Cockatiels (Weiros for short) these are a great bird to start with.
They are so friendly and make beautiful pets, whether you want a full aviary or just a few to breed or even sell some for pets, then the Cockatiels are a great bird to start with and learn from. These birds a great talker and will copy anything you say. I gave my neighbour one of ours. And I could not work out why I heard my phone ringing all the time and I would run inside and no phone call. It took a while to work out that the Weiro had learnt to imitate the sound of the phone ringing.
Things you will need:
- An Aviary approximately 6' x 4'
- Good Perches
- Water and Food containers - never put these under the perches as yes, they will poop in them.
- A good double door, one that you can walk in and shut the first door before entering the aviary. This is to protect yourself from your birds flying away when you open the door.
- Protection one side and half covered on two other sides. This will protect them from the wind and heat.
The next thing is to buy a pair of birds. When I say a pair, it is best to buy one bird from one owner and another from someone else. This will reduce the risk of your birds being related. If you travel around in a caravan this is one bird that will happily go with you.
#Budgerigars Make Great Pets
These beautiful little devils come in a variety of colors. Normally a green when you see them in the bush, although these birds have been bred in many colors now. A lot of breeders take pride in the color challenge of breeding all different colors.
These birds make great talkers although you have to be careful as they will alto pick up the words that you do not want them to say.
The only problem that I had with these little devils was that they can be very vicious. If a female wants a certain breeding nest box, she will kill any birds in it to have it for herself. It will not matter if you have six empty nest boxes, she will still kill for a particular nest.
Aside from that they are still beautiful birds.
